A Multi-Cultural Journey through a Farm Based Curriculum!
Pre-K builds on curiosity with more intentional learning while keeping play at the heart of the day. Children engage in nature-based literacy and math activities: early writing, storytelling, patterning, number sense, science observations, and collaborative projects. Social-emotional skills—flexibility, problem-solving, social awareness and teamwork—are strengthened as students take on more responsibility and follow multi-step activities. Our teachers encourage more independence throughout the day and strengthen their abilities to be engaged in activities for longer periods of time. Entering each day with a walk through the apple orchard, children step into a magical, nature-rich setting designed to nurture the whole child. Surrounded by fresh air, animals, and open green spaces, they learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences that integrate science, language arts, and math into daily activities such as gardening, cooking, art, and caring for our farm animals. We believe in exploring each child’s different learning styles and interests, making it a priority each day so that all students feel supported. We build future global citizens by discovering the world around us through an international and multi-cultural curriculum. The journey begins in our own backyard, travels through our neighborhood, and then to the world around us. A multi-cultural curriculum allows for discovery and exploration. By learning from different cultures, students develop their individual and global awareness and build essential lifelong tolerance and acceptance skills. The final voyage for our Pre-Kindergarteners is to blast off to Kindergarten, ready and prepared. Our program embraces play-based learning, recognizing play as the foundation of cognitive growth, creativity, and problem-solving. With a teacher and assistant teachers supporting small classes, we are able to offer individualized attention, honor diverse learning styles, and encourage curiosity, independence, and joyful engagement. Social–emotional development is woven into every part of the day. Through animal care, cooperative projects, outdoor exploration, and our creative art studio, children learn empathy, responsibility, self-regulation, and confidence. Students continue to strengthen key life skills that include kindness to our planet and all living things. Our goal is to help students become self-reliant and develop a strong self-image. Students benefit from a mixed age group with our 3yr old Nursery buddies, growing through peer learning, leading, following and participating cooperative work and play. Grounded in sustainability and environmental stewardship, our green curriculum teaches children how to recycle, compost, conserve energy, and understand where food comes from. They plant and harvest vegetables, explore different habitats, and develop healthy relationships with nature. Our eco-friendly barn, powered by solar panels, models real-world sustainability in action. Nothing goes to waste on the farm, and each item is incorporated into a project or a learning opportunity. As a farm-based school, we believe deeply in connecting children to land, animals, and seasonal rhythms. They learn naturally as they feed animals, pick apples, observe weather patterns, and participate in the life of our gardens. Children connect with the environment and learn the importance of sustainability while participating in our composting and recycling program. Each day they feed leftovers to our chickens while eggs are brought back to our kitchen. In the kitchen we use math and fine motor skills while baking a healthy, organic treat. In the spring, compost goes into our garden, seeds are planted, we tend and nurture then look forward to harvest time. Our ‘outdoor classroom’ proves to be a key element in The Green School’s philosophy of learning through discovery. A vital part of our philosophy is “paying it forward.” For each student enrolled, we sponsor another child’s education in Thailand through our charity organization, Mari’s Children, fostering global awareness, kindness, and gratitude. |
